A girl sat reading a book with a candle on the table next to her, through the window can be seen the first rays of sun at dawn. Engraved from George Romney's painting 'Serena reading' (Preston, Harris Museum and Art Gallery), which takes as its subject the heroine of 'the Triumphs of Temper' by Romney's friend William Hayley. With a couplet from Hayley's poem below the image.
