Publis'd 23d March 1773
Scarce etching, 18th century watermark; sheet 275 x 210mm (10¾ x 8¼"). Partially trimmed to plate on left. Tear repaired with tape.
Three men playing a viol da gamba, flute and horn. Etching after Henry Bunbury (1750-1811), amateur artist who enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. Tim Clayton writes: 'Prints by Bunbury and his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it.' He designed many prints of rural life such as this, which always remained attactive and picturesque.

King's was founded in 1441 by King Henry VI. His first design was modest, but by 1445 was intended to be a magnificent display of royal patronage. There were to be a Provost and seventy scholars, occupying a substantial site in central Cambridge whose drastic clearance involved the closure of several streets. The college was granted a remarkable series of feudal privileges, and all of this was supported by a substantial series of endowments from the King. The college was to be specifically for boys from Eton College, which he had also founded. The connection with Eton remained strong for many years: it was not until 1865 that the first non-Etonian undergraduates arrived to study at King's, and the first fellow to have not attended Eton was elected in 1873.

A caricature of a snide looking gentleman in extravagant dress stands with hands in pockets and hat under arm. He looks to the left and sticks his tongue out. [n.d., c.1779.]
Etching. 250 x 185mm (9¾ x 7¼"). Trimmed to plate at sides, laid on album paper, foxing.
A seated fat man looks off to the right in disgust, having lost a wager, watched by his hunched dog. This satire was originally published in 1774 with the title ''Damn Bucephalus!'', probably inspired by the horse's close defeat by the famous Eclipse at Newmarket on 17 April 1770. Tim Clayton is quoted on the British Museum website: ''Lord Grosvenor's Mambrino had a highly successful career on the turf from 1773 to 1776 before being put out to stud; he attempted a comeback in 1779 which was unsuccessful. It appears likely, therefore, that Bretherton changed the title of the print from Damn Bucephalus! to Damn Mambrino! about 1779''.

H.W.Bunbury del. J.Bretherton f.
Published 1st April 1774.
Soft-ground etching, 290 x 235mm (11½ x 9¼"). Trimmed to platemark; glued to backing sheet.
Two studies of monks. Etched after Henry Bunbury, an amateur printmaker who subsequently enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. 'Prints by Bunbury an his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Clayton).
see Timothy Clayton, 'The English Print, 1688-1802', p.245; for another Bunbury print with a similar subject see ref. 28182.

Even their cats and dogs are involved in the rivalry! The dubious claims of both are emphasised by the crest top centre, featuring two ducks and the motto 'quack quack quack'.
