Franz Karl Achard (1753-1821) was a German chemist, physicist and biologist. His principal discovery was the production of sugar from sugar beets. He was favoured by King Frederck II of Prussia, and thus had to report twice a week on his research and any new developments. In 1776 he was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin.

George Christian Knapp (1753-1825), German Protestant theologian. He was a professor of theology and author of a book on the Psalms and biographical sketches of Piestist theologians. Engraved after a portrait by Caroline Bardua, Berlin-based painter who exhibited at the academy there (1822-40) and also painted a portrait of Goethe.

Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594), Flemish cartographer, philosopher and mathematician. His 1569 world map, 'Mercator's Projection', the flattened map of the spherical Earth, earned him cartographic fame. He was the first to use the word 'Atlas' for a collection of maps. Engraving, c.1800, of the image of Mercator common to several earlier printed likenesses of the cartographer.

Portrait in profile of Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov (1745 - 1813), Field Marshal of the Russian Empire; in uniform. He served as one of the finest military officers and diplomats under three Romanov Tsars: Catherine II, Paul I and Alexander I. He took part in the suppression of the Polish Bar Confederation's uprising, in the Russo-Turkish Wars and in the Napoleonic War, including two major battles at Austerlitz and Borodino. He was created Prince of Smolensk in 1812.
