In 1850 the Medical Committee of the Royal Brompton Hospital decided to build a small sanatorium in Bournemouth, to be financially independent, to "receive those cases where convalescence has been established”. It was specially built in 1855, to designed by the architect E.B. Lamb and opened its doors as the Royal National Sanatorium for Disease on October 2, 1855.

A rare view of Eye Town Hall, designed by Edward Buckton Lamb, a ‘'Rogue Gothic Revivalist'’ of the mid-Victorian period, described by Pevsner as 'the most original though certainly not the most accomplished architect of his day'. Among his works are St Luke's Chapel in Brompton Hospital and alterations to Hughenden Manor for Benjamin Disraeli.
