Portrait of Charles Fox (1810-1874) an English civil engineer, whose expertise in ironwork construction led to an invitation by Joseph Paxton to build the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Fox was knighted in late 1851 for his contribution to the building of Crystal Palace and employed by the Crystal Palace Company for the re-location of the Crystal Palace to Sydenham Hill.

Sir Charles James Napier (1782-1853), Army officer and Conqueror of Sind. He won a reputation as a fierce and indomitable soldier in the Napoleonic war; accepted Indian commission, 1841, and after several hard-fought battles conquered Sind, 1843. Napier subdued the northern hill tribes, 1844-5, and began preparations for the first Sikh war. He was recalled in 1849 during second Sikh war but unfortunately he arrived too late to take part.

Charles S. Stratton known as General Tom Thumb, the American in Miniature. [Facimile signature.] Born Jan.y 11th 1832. He is smaller than any infant that ever walked alone, is 25 inches in height and weeights only 15 Pounds!

A portrait of Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-83), aged 14. Known as General Tom Thumb, he was a dwarf who achieved great fame under circus pioneer P.T. Barnum. His routines included impersonating characters such as Cupid and Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as singing, dancing and comical banter.

Benjamin Nottingham Webster (1797-1882) was an English actor-manager and dramatist. He had small parts at Drury Lane until he moved to the Haymarket Theatre in 1829. He was the lessee of the Haymarket from 1837 to 1853. Charles Baugniet (1814-1886), artist and lithographer produced this print of Webster, aged 50, seated by his writing table.
