Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) was King of Macedon and is remembered for uniting the states of Greece. He managed to conquer Persia, Egypt and a number of other kingdoms up to the borders of India. He died of a sudden fever, as depicted here on his death bed, at the palace of Nebuchadnezzarr II of Babylon. Engraved in reverse from the painting by Le Sueur now in the National Gallery, London. Charles I (1600-1649), king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Charles was king during most of the English Civil War (1642-51), towards the end of which he was executed rather than abdicating. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713), from a design by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

John Hampden (1594-1643) was an English politician. He was a central figure at the start of the English Revolution and instrumental in the dissolution of the Short Parliament. At the beginning of the English Civil War, he levied a regiment of Buckinghamshire men for the parliamentary cause, however, wounds attained at the Battle of Calgrove Field, led to his death.

George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608 - 1670), military and naval officer. Monck was one of the architects of the Restoration of the monarchy, along with Pepys' patron Edward Montagu. He was an accomplished military commander and served as Joint-Commander-in-Chief with Prince Rupert, in the campaign of 1666 against the Dutch. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from a design by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

Laurence Shirley, 4th Earl Ferrers (1720-1760) was the last member of the House of Lords hanged in England. Lord Ferrers shot and killed his steward named Johnson on 18 January 1760. He was tried for murder by his peers in Westminster Hall, Attorney General Charles Pratt leading for the prosecution.
