George Gordon Noel Byron (1788-1824), British poet and archetypal Romantic figure. Byron was celebrated in life for aristocratic excesses including huge debts, numerous love affairs, rumours of a scandalous incestuous liaison with his half-sister, and self-imposed exile. He travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died at 36 years old from a fever contracted while in Missolonghi, Greece. Engraved from the portrait by Thomas Phillips, which was undertaken as part of a commission by the publisher William Miller to paint the portraits of several poets whose works he published, the intention being to hang them together at Miller's house at 50 Albemarle Street, London. Annette Peach writes of the commission: "In 1813 Murray commissioned from Phillips a portrait of Byron (who brought the publisher more commercial success than any other of his writers), which still hangs over the drawing-room fireplace in Albemarle Street. The half-length view famously shows a pale-complexioned Byron in a white shirt with a large turned-down ‘Byronic’ collar open at the neck to reveal his throat, and wrapped in a dark cloak. The dress and pose are identical to that of Charles Mayne Young in his portrait by G. H. Harlow (1809; Garrick Club, London), where the actor is portrayed as Hamlet, and it is possible that Byron saw Young perform this role. As in his portrait of Blake, Phillips's ability to convey the Romantic (and here self-dramatizing) cast of his sitter's imagination indicates that, although his œuvre is less flamboyant than that of his contemporary Sir Thomas Lawrence, he, too, was quintessentially a Romantic painter." Cosway exhibited her paintings at the Royal Academy from 1781 to 1789, and occasionally thereafter, but her artistic ambitions were hampered by her husband, the artist Richard Cosway, who refused to allow her to sell her work. She was also a prolific printmaker.

A portrait of Edward Stables (c.1782 - 1815), half-length, dressed in military uniform buttoned to the neck, and a sword-belt with a regimental plate across his chest. Stables was a Lieutenant Colonel who was killed at the battle of Waterloo. A monument at St Nicholas Church in Great Hormead, Herts, reads, 'To the memory of Lieutenant Colonel Stables of Great Hormead Bury, in the county of Herts. He served in the Continental Wars under Sir John Moore and the Duke of Wellington, and fell gloriously at the close of the action while commanding a Battalion of the Grenadier Guards on the 18th day of June 1815, in the 33rd year of his age. His body found a soldiers grave near the field of Waterloo'.

Stables was a Lieutenant Colonel who was killed at the battle of Waterloo. A monument at St Nicholas Church in Great Hormead, Herts, reads, 'To the memory of Lieutenant Colonel Stables of Great Hormead Bury, in the county of Herts. He served in the Continental Wars under Sir John Moore and the Duke of Wellington, and fell gloriously at the close of the action while commanding a Battalion of the Grenadier Guards on the 18th day of June 1815, in the 33rd year of his age. His body found a soldiers grave near the field of Waterloo'.

Gustav IV Adolf (1778-1837) was King of Sweden from 1792 until his abdication in 1809. He was the last Swedish ruler of Finland, and after an army revolt, was seized by officers and forced to relinquish the throne. In exile, Gustav used several titles including Count Gottorp, Duke of Holstein-Eutin, and finally settled at St. Gallen in Switzerland, under the name of Colonel Gustafsson. Friederike Dorothea Wilhelmina of Baden (1781-1826) was Queen consort of Sweden from 1797 to 1809. She married King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden on 31 Oct. 1797 and was exiled with him to Switzerland in 1809 following his forced abdication of the throne.
