The murders of the De Witt brothers, Cornelis (1623-72) and Jan (1625-72), shown in four panels (originally printed on one sheet). Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. Jan de Witt opposed the appointment of William of Orange as stadtholder, and after the French invasion of the United Provinces in 1672 the people called for William and demonstrated against Jan. That same year Cornelis de Witt was suspected of treason and condemned to exile for life. As a result Jan resigned his position as councillor pensionary, but when he visited Cornelis in prison in the Hague, a mob gathered, dragged both brothers outside, and murdered them (as shown here). Offered with description of the events and double portrait of the brothers (probably not by de Hooghe).

The murders of the De Witt brothers, Cornelis (1623-72) and Jan (1625-72), shown in four panels (originally printed on one sheet). Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. Jan de Witt opposed the appointment of William of Orange as stadtholder, and after the French invasion of the United Provinces in 1672 the people called for William and demonstrated against Jan. That same year Cornelis de Witt was suspected of treason and condemned to exile for life. As a result Jan resigned his position as councillor pensionary, but when he visited Cornelis in prison in the Hague, a mob gathered, dragged both brothers outside, and murdered them (as shown here). The Siege of Derry (Londonderry) took place in Ireland from 18 April to 28 July 1689, during the Williamite War in Ireland. The city, a Williamite stronghold, was besieged by a Jacobite army until it was relieved by Royal Navy ships. The siege is commemorated annually in August by the Apprentice Boys of Derry. The battle scene is by Romeyn de Hooghe (Dutch, 1645 - 1708), a propagandist for William of Orange (King William III). A panorama of another battlefield, the 'Seige of Bonn' (1689), also by de Hooghe, was originally issued by Johannes Tangena on the same sheet, directly below. The two plates were often separated, and the letterpress commemorates both battles.

A portrait of William III of Orange surrounded by his ancestors and predecessors as Stadtholder: from left to right, William I of Orange (William the Silent); his elder son, Maurits; William's father William II; and Frederik Hendrik, William III's grandfather and youngest son of William I. One of the separate sheets is a view of his entry into Amsterdam, 12 August, 1672, the other two the keys naming the figures in the main image. The print celebrates the reinstatement of the joint post of Stadtholder and Captain General after the Republican faction had abolished it in 1668. In 1672, faced with a French invasion, William took control of the Dutch army and was appointed Stadtholder of Holland and West-Friesland.

A portrait of William III of Orange surrounded by his ancestors and predecessors as Stadtholder: from left to right, William I of Orange (William the Silent); his elder son, Maurits; William's father William II; and Frederik Hendrik, William III's grandfather and youngest son of William I. One of the separate sheets is a view of his entry into Amsterdam, 12 August, 1672, the other two the keys naming the figures in the main image. The print celebrates the reinstatement of the joint post of Stadtholder and Captain General after the Republican faction had abolished it in 1668. In 1672, faced with a French invasion, William took control of the Dutch army and was appointed Stadtholder of Holland and West-Friesland.

Above two figures representing Plenty (with a cornucopia) and War (with a shield) hold a scroll; inset session of Lords above. First state of a print subsequently reworked to fit the arrival of successive monarchs up to and including George II in 1727. Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises.
