An informal sketch portrait of General Henry Wyndham (1790-1860), reclining in a salon chair. As a young captain Wyndham fought at Waterloo in 1815, and was severely injured during the famous closing of the gates at Hougoumont. He was said to have been so disturbed by the incident that he would never again close a door, preferring to sit in a room in a howling draught. He was later MP for Cockermouth (1852-7) and West Cumberland 1857 until his death in 1860.
