Charles Gordon-Lennox (1791-1860) in his peer's robes, wearing his Waterloo Medal. As a soldier he served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsular War, during which time he was shot in the chest, the musket ball never being removed. At Waterloo he was ADC to the Prince of Orange until the prince was wounded, after which he replaced the wounded Sir Alexander Gordon as ADC to Wellington. As a politician he was MP for Chichester 1812 until 1819, when he entered the Lords. An ultra-Tory, he campaigned against Catholic emancipation, free trade and the repeal of the Corn Laws. The 1847 introduction of the Military General Service Medal for the survivors of the campaigns between 1793 and 1814 (French Revolutionary War and Napoleonic Wars) was primarily due to his enlistment of the support of Queen Victoria.
