A scarce view of Cairo, lithographed by Gustave W. Seitz for 'Carl Werner's Nile Sketches', 1875. Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-94), a German watercolourist, traveled through Spain in 1856-7 and visited Egypt and the Holy Land in 1862-4 (publishing his book 'Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Places' in 1865). He was one of the few non-Muslims able to gain access to paint the interior of the Dome of the Rock.

The Golden Gate, the oldest existing gate in Jerusalem's Old City Walls, which Jesus passed through on Palm Sunday, fulfilling a prophecy that the Messiah would enter the city through this gate. As this tradition continued among the city's Jews, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I had the Golden Gate bricked up in 1541 to prevent it ever happening. Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-94) was a German watercolourist who visited Egypt and the Holy Land in 1862-4, where he was one of the few non-Muslims able to gain access to paint the interior of the Dome of the Rock. He published his book 'Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Places' in 1865.

A scarce view of the Island Philae from the north, lithographed by Gustave W. Seitz for 'Carl Werner's Nile Sketches', 1875. At the front is Trajan's Kiosk, with the pylons of the Temple of Isis behind left. Because of the building of the Aswan High Dam the whole complex had to be moved to the nearby Island of Agilkia. Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-94), a German watercolourist, traveled through Spain in 1856-7 and visited Egypt and the Holy Land in 1862-4 (publishing his book 'Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Places' in 1865).
