Elizabeth I (1533-1603); reigned 1558-1603. The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth came to the throne on the death of her half-sister, Mary I. Her long reign, beginning in 1558, saw the secure establishment of the Church of England. Despite receiving many proposals of marriage, Elizabeth remained single and became legendary as the 'virgin queen'. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from design with allegorical elements and verses in French, by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

Engraving with very large margins, platemark approx 305 x 190mm (12 x 7½").
Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Baron Fairfax (1612 - 1671), wearing collar and armour. Perhaps the most accomplished Parliamentarian officer, Fairfax was appointed Lord General of the New Model Army after his victory at Marston Moor, 1644. His decisive string of victories, beginning with the battle of Naseby in 1645, won the Civil War for Parliament. Extremism alarmed him and he refused to serve on the court which tried the King or to lead the army into Scotland in 1650. He retired from public life until 1660, when he supported General Monck's march to London to demand a free parliament and was one of those who went to the Hague to greet Charles II before his Restoration to the throne. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713). The portrait derives from a painting by Robert Walker engraved in the 17th century by Faithorne, but the design is by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

[n.d. c.1720.]
Engraving with large margins. Plate 310 x 185mm. 12¼ x 7¼".
Portrait of Mary of Modena, wife of King James II; bust and shoulders in frontal view, in a laurel oval on a pedestal draped with a curtain, a crown at left. Illustration to fourth volume (facing page 478) of Isaac de Larrey's "Histoire d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande" (Rotterdam: 1697-1713). Mary of Modena (1658-1718) was the Roman Catholic Queen of James II. She dedicated herself to the conversion of England, but her support of her husband's pro-Catholic policies made her unpopular. The fear of a Catholic succession to the throne, caused by the birth of their son James Francis Edward in 1668, led to the invitation of William of Orange to England.
