[1848] Lithograph with hand-colouring and gum arabic, rare, printed area 215 x 310mm (8½ x 12¼"). Paper tone; originally printed on sheet with 'Forcing a passage through the burning prairie'. Plate from 'Sketches in North America and the Oregon Territory' by Captain Henry James Warre (1848). Warre (1819-98), aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief of the forces in British North America, made the sketches for the book in 1845-6 while undertaking a secret military reconnaissance tour of what is now Oregon and Washington, assessing the strategic value of the region. The land dispute between America and Britain which occasioned the mission was resolved by the Treaty of Oregon in 1846. Abbey 656.16
