Pair of mezzotints. Each sheet 440 x 560mm (17¼ x 22"). Trimmed to plate on three sides, to image at bottom, losing titles and inscriptions, a few small worm holes, backed with newspape. However fine impressions.
Two scenes outside a thatched cottage: in the morning a cart horse stands ready harnessed and a man pulls on his boots, while his wife pours an alcoholic drink from a bottle; later in the day the family unload their purchases while a large sow look on.

While there is no reference by Julia Frankau to this very unusual and rare lithograph of the Dalmatian dog, an exhibition list does mention a drawing with the same title exhibited at the British Institute in 1806. A prolific artist, James Ward R..A. (1769 - 1859) was one of the finest animal, portrait, and landscape painters of Regency England. Brittle, pious, and argumentative, Ward worked well into the mid-19th century, creating dynamic compositions that epitomized Romanticism. He was devoted to the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, and emulated them more than any of his contemporaries.

From the series 'Fourteen Horses Dedicated to His Most Gracious Majesty George IV'. Ward described this horse as: 'A celebrated Race-Horse, the Property of Ralph Riddel, Esq.'. Doctor Syntax (1811-1838) raced exclusively in the North of England, winning at least thirty-six races in ten seasons from 1814 to 1823. He was retired to stud in 1824 and proved a successful sire of winners, including Ralph, Chapeau d'Espagne and Beeswing, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup in 1842.

A pair of mezzotints depicting a mother's attempts to wash her child. In the first plate a crying child sits upon her nurse's knee while her mother bribes her with a doll, next to her on the bed her sisters attempt to persuade her to allow her maid to wash her. Behind them a younger child sleeps and on the floor a boy forces a disgruntled cat to ride a toy horse. In the second plate the cleaned child stands happily upon a table holding the doll in her arms, surrounded by her contented mother, maid and sisters. Behind them the boy tickles the sleeping child with the tail of the cat.

James Ward (1769 - 1859), engraver and painter of animals. Among a range of influences those of the rustic genre painter, George Morland, and of Peter Paul Rubens dominated his art. In the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Ward became the most sought after painter of animals of his day, painting mainly horses but also other animals as well as landscapes and genre scenes. His masterpiece is the monumental Gordale Scar (Tate Britain). Ward continued to be an exceptionally prolific artist throughout his long career but, in spite of this, his later years were plagued by financial difficulties. After his own oil painting in the National Portrait Gallery.
