Gaucher de Châtillon (1250 - 1328), constable of France under five different kings. Engraved after a portrait by Simon Vouet (c.1632-5) now in the Louvre. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne.

Olivier V de Clisson (1336-1407), Breton soldier. Battles he was involved in included the Siege of Brest (1373) and Battle of Roosebeke (1382). Engraved after a portrait by Simon Vouet (Nantes, Musée Dobrée). From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

Subject from Tasso's 'La Gerusalemme liberata' (Jerusalem delivered) in which the Saracen princess Erminia cuts off her hair to bind the wounds of the injured Christian warrior Tancred. This subject had previously been depicted by Nicolas Poussin, and French 18th century painter Simone Vouet is attributed as the source for this Italian lithograph.

[Lot and his Daughters]

Mezzotint, platemark 180 x 160mm (7 x 6¼") very large margins. 19th century impression on wove paper.
Lot and his daughters escaped the burning city of Sodom (seen in the distance here, lower right) to dwell in a mountain cave. His daughters, fearing that they would not be able to have children in any other way, plied their father with wine in an episode depicted by many artists. Mezzotint by painter and engraver Robert Robinson (fl.1674-d.1706). Robinson is chiefly remembered for early mezzotints such as this, while the most notable of his surviving paintings are the panels he painted for a house on St Botolph Street in the City of London, now housed at the Sir John Cass School in Aldgate.
