In 1734 Vernet's patron Joseph de Seytres, Marquis de Caumont offered to sponsor Vernet to travel to Italy, where he lived until returning to France in 1753. The larger part of Vernet's Italian output consists of imaginary landscapes, either of pastoral landscapes such as this or coastal scenes of either calm or stormy water.

Scene by the sea with figures gathered around tent warming food on a fire, and another figure fishing. Part of a set of landscapes representing the times of day after Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789), regarded during his lifetime as the leading European landscape and marine painter. Vernet's clientele included German princes and Russian nobles, and from the 1760s to 1780s no collection was deemed complete without examples of his work. His influence is evident in the landscapes of British artists of the following generation such as Richard Wilson and Joseph Wright of Derby.

These views of various ports of France are from a series of paintings by the French painter Joseph Vernet, executed between 1754 and 1765, commissioned by King Louis XV to promote the French navy. Upon completion, the total of fifteen paintings were exhibited in Paris in the Royal Academy's Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.

A ship in trouble of a rocky shore, men working to save sailors from the water, after Joseph Vernet (1714-89, father of Carle Vernet). The engraver's name is Charles Corbutt, of whom nothing can be traced other than his prints. It is generally believed that the name is a pseudonym used by Richard Houston and probably also by Richard Purcell.
