The Battle of Arcole (15-17 November 1796), fought south east of Verona between French and Austrian forces attempting to relieve Mantova. The scene has Napoleon riding Marengo over the bridge, following the Tricoleur: in the painting by Horace Vernet (not Carle as the inscription states) it is Napoleon who carrys the standard. The poem tells the story of Ivan Stepanovych Mazeppa (1640-1709) who, having been found having an affair with his count's wife, is strapped naked to the back of a horse which rides through the wilds of Eastern Europe. One scene shows Mazeppa lying on the ground, his horse having fallen to the ground, surrounded by wild horses, the other shows him, tied to the horse which gallops through the woods pursued by wolves.

An engraved version of Horace Vernet's memorial to the death of Napoleon, ''Le Tombeau de Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène ou L’apothéose de Napoléon'' painted in 1822. It depicts Napoleon's aides on St Helena, Generals Charles-Tristan Montholon (1783-1853) and Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), with Bertrand's family, consoling one another, watched by ghostly figures from Napoleon's armies and Sultan Selim III of Egypt. St Helena is depicted as a rock in a stormy sea, with wreckage representing Napoleon's victories in the sea. Napoleon's grave is adorned with his bicorne hat and sword. The painting was first engraved by Jazet in 1822 with the title 'Le Songe de Bertrand'.

The Battle of Wagram (5-6 July 1809) was one of the most important military engagements of the Napoleonic Wars and ended in a decisive victory for Emperor Napoleon I. The battle virtually spelled the destruction of the Fifth Coalition, the Austrian and British-led alliance against France.
