A half length portrait of Frederic de Thoms (1669-1746), a German diplomat and art collector. As the Duke of Brunswick's envoy, he came to London in 1719 and became secretary to George I. He was the first Freemason in Germany, a fact commemorated in later states of this print, which had a masonic jewel added. This proof state is the only one in which he looks to the side rather than the front.
