HMS Vengeance, an 84-gun second rate ship of the line launched 1824, nicknamed 'the wind's-eye liner' because of its speed. In August 1851 Vengeance left Portsmouth for the Mediterranean, commanded by Captain Lord Edward Russell: after stops at Lisbon and Gibraltar she arrived at Malta on 2 October. Later that year William R. Mends took over as commander. When the Crimean War broke out in 1853 she helped transport the troops to the Black Sea and took part in the bombardment of Odessa and the Battle of Alma.
