Mezzotint, very scarce, with very small margins; platemark 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾"). Glued to backing sheet; creases and small tears. Slight spotting.
Portrait of author James Stephen (1733?-1779). Only engraved likeness, after William Thompson (c.1730-1800), a portrait painter whose work is now known mostly through prints. Stephen and Thomson were incarcerated together in the king's bench prison, where Thompson's angry protests against his imprisonment gained him a certain notoriety.
