Scarce mezzotint. 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾"). Narrow margins, glued to backing sheet, creases and small tears, slight spotting.
The only engraved portrait of author James Stephen (c.1733-1779), after William Thompson (c.1730-1800), a portrait painter whose work is now known mostly through prints. Stephen and Thomson were incarcerated together in the king's bench prison, where Thompson's angry protests against his imprisonment gained him a certain notoriety.
