The Battle of Eylau (7-8th February 1807), in which Napoleon fought a Russian army that was reinforced by Prussians late in the day. Although the French gained possession of the battlefield, they had suffered enormous losses and failed to destroy the Russian army; the following morning, Marshal Ney observed: ''Quel massacre!
