Joseph Cotton (1745-1825). After passing his Lieutenant's exams in the Royal Navy, he joined the East India Company. After only two voyages in command of the East Indiaman 'Queen Charlotte' he could afford to retire from the sea, living at Leyton in Essex for the rest of his life. In 1803 he became deputy-master of Trinity House, holding office for about twenty years. In 1807 he renegotiated the century-old lease for the lighthouse on the Eddystone rocks. Cotton was also a director of the East India Company (1795-1823), a director of the East India Docks Company (chairman in 1803), and a governor of the London Assurance Corporation. Frankau 79. Sir Robert John Harvey (1785-1860), shown wearing the Portuguese medals given to him when he was British liaison officer to the Portuguese army during the Peninsular War. They are the 'Peninsular War Campaign Cross' (6 campaigns), the insignia of a 'Knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword', the rare 'Commander’s Medal of the Peninsular War' (10 campaigns) and the Army Gold Medal (Orthez). After the capture of Badajoz in 1812 Harvey was made a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Portuguese Army, but a year later he received the same rank in the British army on the recommendation of Wellington, after the Battle of Vitoria. In 1817 he was knighted and 1831 he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. His final rank was Major-General. After the army he followed his father as partner in the Norwich bank of Harvey and Hudson, later the Crown Bank.
