Engraving on chine collé, very fine proof before all letters. 770 x 630mm (30¼ x 24¾") very large margins.
Small boats struggling against waves in the Thames off Tilbury fort, larger ships in the background. After Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA (1793-1867), a marine painter who worked as a theatre set painter with David Roberts early in his career and worked with him on several large-scale diorama and panorama projects in the 1820s and 1830s. Having moved on from set design he continued to paint them for the amateur productions directed by Charles Dickens. Painted in 1849, the original oil is in Thurrock Museum.
