Joh. Schoerel pinxt I. Bergmann del. 1826
Gedruckt unter der Direction von Strixner in Stuttgart.
Lithograph, sheet 435 x 320mm (17 x 12½"). Glued to original backing sheet.
Mary breastfeeding the Christ child in a landscape, probably after a panel by the Netherlandish painter and ecclesiastic Jan van Scorel (1495-1562). Large lithograph by Ignaz Bergmann, probably for the 'Galerie des Frères Boisserée', an ambitious project in the early nineteenth century to publish prints of the extraordinary collection of early German and Netherlandish painting assembled by Sulpiz and Melchior Boisserée following the closure of many churches and monsteries by the invading French. This was instigated by Johsnn Neopomuk Strixner, who after seeing the collection in 1819 gave up a steady job, sold his house and possessions, and dedicated all of his energies to the project.
