Godard van Reede-Ginckel, first earl of Athlone (1644-1703), army officer. Born in Utrecht in the Netherlands (where he continued to spend much of his time when not fighting), Ginckel accompanied William to England in 1688 and fought by the new king's side at the battle of the Boyne. In 1690 was made commander of the king's army in Ireland, and between 1690 and 1692 led it to a series of victories at Ballymore, Athlone, Galway and Limerick. Returning to England in 1692 Ginckel was raised to the Irish peerage and given 40,000 acres of land in Ireland (which he sold at a knockdown price before William's grants of Irish land were reversed by the English parliament in 1700). Between 1692 and his death he was present at several important battles on the continent.
