A cigar-smoking publican at the bar with a glass of stout, Salomon van Abbe (Dutch, 1883-1972). Born in Amsterdam, he came to England as a child. Studied in London and was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Exhibited at the Salon, Royal Academy.

Landscape after Salomon Gessner (1730-88), Swiss artist and poet. His landscapes were inspired by the study of 17th century artists such Poussin, Gaspar Dughet and Claude, and renew the Arcadian pastoral worlds of those artists. Rare print by Zurich-based printmaker and publisher Heinrich Pfeninger (1749-1815).

Plate seven from Salomon Gessner's series of etchings 'Folge der Landschaften in antikem Geschmack'. Gessner (1730-88) achieved international fame as a writer and etched illustrations to his texts as well as producing standalone series of etchings such as these, as well as paintings and drawings (of which the most significant collection is in the Kunsthaus Zurich). His son Conrad Gessner was also a significant artist.

John Speed (1552? - 1629), historian and antiquary famous for his county atlas, the 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' (1611-1612) and England's first world atlas, 'A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World' (1627). This is a 19th century copy of the frontispiece portrait from the combined edition of Speed's two atlases (1632), engraved by Salomon Savery.

Salomon van Abbe (1883 - 1955), painter and book illustrator of Dutch origin; came to England when 5 years old and studied with Tripp, C.Rae, W.Baynes and W.Seymour; he exhibited at the Royal Society of Arts between 1933-55. This drypoint became the most exhibited of all of his prints, including at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1927, at the Bromhead Art Gallery exhibition in London in 1928, and at The Royal Society of British Artists in 1933.
