The attribution to Rubens is doubtful. Aeneas carries his elderly father Anchises from the burning city, accompanied by Aeneas' wife Creusa, who died in the escape attempt, and small son Ascanius.

Although printed on one sheet of paper, the portraits were designed to be separated and placed either side of the triptuch's central image, that of St. Ildefonso of Toledo receiving a chasuble from the Virgin Mary. The triptych is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna

Fine engravings after portraits by Rubens, who was appointed court painter to Albert and Isabella although he was permitted to remain in his hometown of Antwerp and accept commissions from whoever he chose.

Copy after Rubens by the Scottish painter and etcher Andrew Geddes (1783-1844). The Oxford DNB states that 'as an etcher Geddes ranks higher than as a painter; his plates may be regarded as among the very earliest examples in modern British art of the brilliancy, concentration, and spirited selection of line proper to a ‘painter's-etching''. Portrait of Democritus (c. 46 c. 370 BC) who was an Ancient Greek pre-Socratic philosopher from Abdera, primarily remembered today for his formulation of an atomic theory of the universe, engraved by William Blake. Democritus wrote extensively on a wide variety of topics. None of Democritus' original work has survived, except through second-hand references. Many of these references come from Aristotle, who viewed him as an important rival in the field of natural philosophy. He was known in antiquity as the ‘laughing philosopher’ because of his emphasis on the value of cheerfulness. From Vol I of Lavater, pg. 159.

The example in the British Museum (1871,1209.3425) has 'et excudit' removed. The painting is in the Museo del Prado (P01687).

A story told by Roman historian Valerius Maximus (c.AD 50): Cimon, sentenced to starve to death in prison, is suckled by his daughter Pero. The plate was then published by Gaspar de Hollander in the 1660s, followed by the van Merlen family (Theodore II & his son Cornelis. See Ref: 53956 for different publication.

Sir Balthasar Gerbier (1592-1663/67), art agent, miniature painter, and architect, with his wife Debora Kip and their eight children (it is suggested that the girl in the centre is either a servant or a dwarf). While Gerbier's creative efforts have been disparaged (Pepys said one of his books was 'not worth a turd'), in recent years attention has turned towards Gerbier's work as keeper of the picture collection of George Villiers, marquess of Buckingham. Frederick, Prince of Wales, bought the original oil as a Van Dyck in 1749; however the Royal Collection now ascribes it to Sir Peter Paul Rubens and his studio (probably Jacob Jordaens). Gerbier and Rubens first met in the 1720s while conducting diplomatic business (it is claimed they were using Buckingham's collecting as a cover for conducting treaties between Britain and Spain). As Gerbier's family grew the painting was extended: in c.1629-30 it only featured Debora, three children and a baby; c. 1631-4 more canvas was stitched on, on which Gerbier and the two central figures were added; finally c. 1638-41 the three children on the right were apended. The timespan of the additions make most of the children look the same age. The original painting was sketched by Edward Edwards to prepare this engraving, which was published in 'The Most Capital Paintings in England', a five-volume set that was a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell.

Challoner Smith describes a portrait of the Prince & Princess of Orange as 'his only known mezzotinto' (CS p.1044). He was a collector of drawings, and owned thirty-odd important items, including ones by Rembrandt and Van Dyck. He engraved this plate with his son, Andreas.

Behind are his unfaithful wife Gomer and two younger children, Lo-ruhamah (which translates as 'not pitied') and Lo-ammi ('not my people'). His marriage represents the breakdown in the relationship between God and the people of Israel. Originally published in a Dutch bible, 'Historiae Sacrae Veteris et Novi Testamenti', the red ruling suggests this example comes from the English edition, 'Figures of the Bible, in wich almost every history of the Holy Scriptures is discribed'.

St Ignatius of Loyola (1491 - 1556) was the principal founder and first Superior General of the Society of Jesus. He was very active in fighting the Protestant Reformation and promoting the subsequent Counter-Reformation. He was beatified and then on March 12, 1622, was canonized. His feast day is July 31st. He is the patron saint of the Basque historical territories of Guipúzcoa and Biscay and the Society of Jesus, among other things. He stands in a gesture of blessing and holding the open book of Rule of his Order, with the Jesuit motto 'Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam' inscribed within. A ray of divine light penetrates the dark background above him. By John Brandard (1812 - 1863), Victorian lithographer, engraver and illustrator. After the painting by Peter Paul Rubens at Warwick Castle, formerly the altar-painting of the Jesuit's Church at Brussels. It is the companion piece to a representation of St Francis Xavier

The Grand Duchess standing in front of a draped curtain, wearing a brocaded dress and pearl jewellery. Her marriage to Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, took place on 18 December 1565 in Florence. Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1541 - 1587), father of Marie de Médicis, Queen and Regent of France (1573 - 1642). The Grand Duke stands on a balcony, wearing breeches and ermine-trimmed cape, with cross of the Order of St Stephen. His left hand rests on a cane, with a draped curtain behind. Plates 2 and 3 from a series of twenty-four portraits 'La Gallerie du Palais du Luxembourg', by Gérard Edelinck (1640 - 1707) after Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640). The paintings now hang in Paris, in the Musée du Louvre.

Peter Paul Ruben's 'Feast in the House of Simon the Pharisee', painted in Flanders circa 1618-20, representing the conflict between the material values and religious dogmatism of the Pharisees world and the Christian doctrine of sympathy, charity and goodness. Here the repentant sinner washing Christ's feet with her tears is named as Mary Magdalene; however the Gospel of Luke leaves her nameless. At the time of this engraving the painting was part of the art collection of Sir Horace Walpole (1676-1745) at Houghton, Norfolk. Following his death part of the collection was sold to pay off debts, and by the 1770s it was inevitable the rest would suffer the same fate. Before it could be dispersed John Boydell commissioned a vast series of mezzotints of the collection, which was fortuitous: despite John Wilkes attempt to persuade Parliament to buy the collection for the nation 206 paintings were sold to Catherine the Great for £40,550 in 1779. 127 works from Houghton, including this one, are now in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

The three Fates, on clouds beneath Juno and Jupiter, spin the thread which determines Marie's destiny. Consisting of twenty-four paintings, the series was commissioned by Marie for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. They now hang in the Louvre.

A mythological scene showing the hunt of the Calydonian Boar led by the Greek hero Meleager. The fierce huntress Atalanta, with whom Meleager was in love is shown having fired an arrow into the side of the beast. As Atalanta drew the first blood she was awarded the hide. Enraged that the hide had been awarded to a woman, the fellow huntsmen, among who were Meleager's uncle and brother, fought and were killed by Meleager who was in turn killed by his mother for murdering her son and brother.
