A scarce view of Claremont, engraved by Jacob Bonneau after a drawing by John Rocque, when the house was occupied by the Duke of Newcastle. John Rocque (c. 1704-62 is better known for his plans of country estates and his monumental maps of London.

Engraved map, one sheet only (of two). Dissected and laid on linen, with tab and title label in French mss. Superb original colour. 590 x 1000mm (23¼ x 39¼"). A few water streaks.
The northern half of Rocque's large format map of England and Wales, in exceptional original colour. It was published towards the end of the Seven Years' War, when the British were getting the upper hand and thus becoming the dominant world power. This is reflected in the superb title cartouches, which features Britannia with the Cap of Liberty, the British Lion and the Greek gods Athena and Mercury.

Plan of the gardens and grounds at Wilton; the house towards the bottom with more formal gardens and large fish pond to the right, looking out towards the River Nader, and park land beyond; with inset views of the great bridge, the house itself, the arcade, and the porter's lodge on the left, and at top a further view of the bridge from the north. Below on left a plan of the ground floor on a scroll.

The most detailed map of Rotherhithe and Limehouse up to that time, showing the locations of the small docks made obsolete by the building of the East and West India docks half a century later. This plate was on the eastern edge of an iconic 24 sheet map, with a scale of 26 inches to a mile, surveyed by John Rocque (1736 - 1762) between 1735 and 1746. The map's eleborate engraved border runs down the right of this sheet.
