Kafir Women.
H.R. [Lieut. Hugh Graham.]
Lithographed, Printed & Published by Dickinson Brothers, New Bond St. [n.d., 1854.]
Tinted lithograph with hand colour. Printed area 290 x 380mm (11½ x 15"). Cut from larger sheet, corner torn
Southern African women around a cooking fire. Originally an Arabic word for a non-Muslim, 'Kafir' was adopted by the Portuguese as a blanket term for the tribes of southern Africa. It is relatively recently that the term has become a racial slur. The view is plate 18 from 'Scenes in Kafirland, and Incidents in the Kafir War of 1851-2-3. From Sketches by Two Officers of the 43rd L.t-Infantry', a record of the 7th Xhosa Wars. The only clue to the artists is their initials, 'LG' and 'HR'; according to Mendelssohn's perusal of Hart's Army List, the only matching serving officers were Lieutenants Lumley Graham and Hugh Robinson.
