Reissue of a plate first published c.1735-43, as part of a set of eight engraving after Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) in the collection of Joseph Smith., English collector and patron based in Venice who also had a long association with Canaletto. By the time this plate was published in 1792 the painting was already in the Royal Collection, where it remains to this day (although it currently hangs at Osterley). One of few prints after Ricci, an itinerant Italian artist whose career took him all over Europe, including time spent in England.

An Italianate landscape by Marco Ricci, one of eighteen dedicated to Joseph Smith (c.1682-1770), his patron. Smith, the British consul at Venice 1744-60, was a patron of artists, most notably Canaletto, and as a collector and connoisseur was a major draw on the British Grand Tour. His collection of drawings were bought for George III and form the nucleus of the Royal Collection of drawings in the Print Room at Windsor Castle. BM: 1871,0812.3981

Man treading grapes in a barrel on wheels on right, with woman carrying a basket of grapes nearby. Several figures picking fruit from trees on left. One of a set of eight etchings after Marco Ricci originally published together by Joseph Goupy. Ricci (1676 - 1730) was a landscape painter who spent much of the period 1708-16 in England.
