Frances Abington (1737-1815), actress. Born in lowly circumstances, Abington grew up in the slums around Drury Lane, and sold flowers and sang in Covent Garden as a girl. Along with other jobs she did when young (kitchenmaid, milliner's assistant), various accounts of her life hint at prostitution during her early years. After making a start as an actress in London her first professional success came while working in Dublin, rejoining Garrick's Drury Lane company where she established herself as one of the leading comedy actresses of her generation. She was also the mistress of at least two prominent figures. Engraving after the several portrait 'Mrs Abington as the Comic Muse' by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1764-8, hair and dress repainted 1772-3) now in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This was one of several portraits that Reynolds painted of Abington- he was an admirer and purchased twelve tickets for her benefit performance in 1772. Reynolds' portrait was a companion to his portrait of Sarah Siddons as 'the Tragic Muse'.

Brother of Charles Bretherton, he is particularly associated with Henry William Bunbury, many of whose works he engraved and published. His stock of plates was auctioned in 1799. During the Napoleonic Wars her husband died from wounds received in battle, and the princess returned to Britain in 1807, granted protection by George III. The engraver was Richard Purcell, who often used the alias of 'Corbutt', generally with the prefix of 'Charles', but sometimes 'Philip' or initials, when pirating other plates

Rear Admiral Samuel Barrington RN (1729 — 1800) British Admiral whose career spanned 50 years served in the Mediterranean against North African Corsairs, off the West African coast, off France and in the Channel. He accompanied Commordore Keppel to North America in 1755 and again served with Keppel in 1761 at Belle-Isle. He served as a Captain in the Channel for many years when in 1778 was advanced to Rear Admiral of the White and sent as Commander in Chief in the West Indies. Having been succesful in taking St. Lucia from the French he served in the West Indies for another couple of years after which in 1782 he returned to the Channel Fleet and served under Howe at the relief of Gibraltar.

The published state ot this portrait of Lady Ann Bonfoy (1729-1810), unusually still untitled. The daughter of Richard Eliot of Port Eliot, Cornwall, Anne married to a captain in the Royal Navy, Hugh Bonfoy (c1720-1762) in November 1751. They had one daughter together before he died in 1762, also Ann, who married the First Earl of Ely. The elder Ann was Lady of the Bedchamber to the daughters of George III. Reynolds had painted a group portrait of the Eliot family in 1746, before his departure for Italy. This was one of the first of his portrait to be engraved in mezzotint.

Elizabeth seated at right, is directed and facing to left, with her arms extended across her body to the right, holding a garland of flowers. A large urn can be seen behind to the right, and landscape in the distance and Capel-Coningsby succeeded his father as 5th Earl of Essex, and served as Recorder and High Steward of Leominster in 1802, and as Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire from 1802 to 1817. He became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1801, and received an honorary D.C.L. from Oxford University in 1810.

Cavendish was owner of the "Portland Vase" when it was copied by Josiah Wedgwood and subsquently placed it in the British Museum on loan until the Museum purchased the vase in 1945.

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Chambers worked initially for the Swedish East India Company, travelling to China where he studied Chinese architecture and decoration. Returning to Europe, he studied architecture in Paris and Italy before moving to London in 1755. Chambers is best remembered for designing and building Somerset House, a project he worked on from 1775 to 1795. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy and was its first Professor of Architecture. Engraved after the portrait c.1780 by Sir Joshua Reynolds (London, Royal Academy of Arts), and cropping the composition so that the Strand facade of Somerset House, clearly visible in the painting, is unidentifiable here.

This impression formerly in the collection of Martin Erdmann, New York-based banker and collector, particularly of British eighteenth century mezzotints, in which area he acquired 'one of the most remarkable collections known, both for quantity and quality of impressions' (Lugt).
