Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), author of 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina', from Il'ya Repin's 1901 full-length portrait of Tolstoy, barefooted (St Petersburg, State Museum), cropping the composition to the sitter's upper body. Repin (1844-1930), the foremost exponent of the late 19th century Russian Realist style, first met Tolstoy in 1880 and produced several portraits of him.
