William Henry West Betty (1791-1874), a child actor billed as the 'Young Roscius' for his performances in adult roles like Hamlet and Romeo, 1804-6, at Covent Garden. After leaving the stage in 1808 to study at Christ's College, Cambridge, his attempts to return to the stage as an adult all failed. This plate is unusual in that the entire surface is mezzotinted. The published state also had 'The Young Roscius' written in the lower image. Whitman: 26, state i of ii.

Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), wood-engraver. At the age of fourteen Bewick was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. He devoted himself to engraving on wood, and is credited with reviving this art and establishing it as a major form of printmaking. Bewick developed the technique of cutting a design into hardwood cut across, rather than with, the grain, using a sharp tool called a bruin. In 1775, he received a payment from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce for a wood engraving of the Huntsman and the Old Hound. Bewick's most important works are illustrations for books such as A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and A History of British Birds (1797 and 1804).

John Campbell (1680-1743), army officer and politician. Commissioner for negotiating Union with Scotland in 1705, Campbell served with distinction at Ramillies, Oudenard, Malplaquet and other battlefields in the War of the Spanish Succession. In 'the Fifteen', Argyll led the government army at Sheriffmuir and defeated the Jacobites led by the Earl of Mar. He was Master General of the Ordnance from 1725-1740 and was promoted to Field Marshal in 1736. In 1742, a year before his death, he was given the position of Commander in Chief of the British Army. Engraved after the full-length portrait by Allan Ramsay (Inverary Castle). Ex: collection of the late Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd; CS 15 (only state); for another portrait of Campbell see ref. 7108.

His reign was marked by a series of military conflicts, including the Seven Years' War, the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars which, with a few setbacks, made Britain the dominant power of Europe. Henry Grattan (1746-1820) was a member of the Irish House of Commons and a campaigner for legislative freedom for the Irish Parliament in the late 18th century. He opposed the Act of Union 1800 that merged the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain. A member of the Anglo-Irish elite of Protestant background, Grattan was a distinguished student at Trinity College, Dublin where he began a lifelong study of classical literature, and was especially interested in the great orators of antiquity. James Francis Edward Keith (1696 - 1758), Scottish field marshal of Prussia. Keith participated in the Jacobite uprising of 1715 and in the abortive invasion of 1719 with his brother; escaping to the Continent, he first entered the service of Spain and then went to Russia, where he gained honour in both civil and military offices, and was given command of a regiment of guards in 1728. Later he went to Prussia and became close friends with Frederick the Great, who made him a field marshal in 1747. Keith entered the circle of Europe’s leading intellectuals and rendered great service to Prussia in the early part of the Seven Years War, and was killed in the battle of Hochkirch. William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath (1684-1764), Statesman. Throughout the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), Pulteney played a prominent part in the Whig struggle to regain power from the Tories. He became a Whig Member of Parliament in 1705 and held a number of government posts before falling out with Sir Robert Walpole, the Whig Prime Minister. From his opposition faction, Pulteney was in a position to take over the government on three occasions, but failed to do so. When Walpole fell from power in 1742, Pulteney declined two requests by George II to form a government, accepting instead the first Lordship of the Treasury in the 1st Earl of Wilmington's ministry (1742-3) and the earldom of Bath.
