A view of Monte Testaccio, the artificial mound in Rome, made almost entirely of fragments of broken amphorae dating from the time of the Roman Empire. It has both a religious and military significance, the latter in 1849 as the site of an Italian gun battery, under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi, in the successful defence of Rome against an attacking French Army.
