A Ravine near Vosse-Vangen
Drawn from Nature by Edwd Price. Engraved by John Linnell [c.1839].
Etching before mezzotint, platemark 120 x 180mm (4¾ x 7"). Old ink mss. additions. Trimmed to platemark.
Norwegian landscape after Edward Price, published as an illustration to Price's 'Norway, Views of Wild Scenery' (1839). Etching by John Linnell (1792 - 1882), painter and printmaker who was William Blake’s last patron and a good friend of Samuel Palmer (who married Linnell's daughter Hannah). After specializing in portraiture during his early career, Linnell turned towards rural landscapes in later years, which sold for high prices. Linnell's reputation deteriorated after his death but his early, visionary landscapes have recently been the subject of renewed interest.
