A view of a triumphal arch built in 25BC. The wooden crucifix below the vault was placed there in 1449 as a votive offering against the flooding of the river Buthier. A caprice etched by Piranesi as a half-title to one of his books, with the text within a border printed from a separate plate, simulating a stone memorial. Printed from two plates. The text roughly translates as 'Roman Antiquities from the time of the Republic and the First Emperors, designed and engraved by the Venetian architect Giambattista Piranesi and by the same is dedicated to the most illustrious and most reverened Monseigneur Giovanni Bottari, private chaplain to Pope Benedict XIV, the guardian of the Vatican Library and canon of Santa Maria in Trestevere.'

A view of the Arch of Septimus Severus in the Roman Forum, still half-buried. To the left is the Colonna di Foca (Phocas); to the right is the Chiesa Santi Luca e Martina martiri. First published 1759, this is an example of Hind's state iii of vi, a life-time impression (so pre-1778)m with Piranesi's address and price. Hind 54.

The Egyptian Obelisk in Rome. First state of the etching by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78), architect and printmaker whose views of Rome have been immensely influential in contributing to the understanding of eighteenth century Rome. Piranesi's prints of 'Carceri' (prisons) have been at least as influential on subsequent artists for their gothic atmosphere. Hind 53 i/v.

The ancient theatre of Marcellusin Rome. Named after Marcus Marcellus, Augustus' nephew, who died five years before the theatre was completed, it was formally inaugurated in 12BC by Augustus. Engraving purporting to be after G.B. Piranesi, although differing in many ways from Piranesi's print of the building. Piranesi's name may have been used to give the impression of greater authenticity. One of a series of views re-published by Laurie & Whittle in the 1790s.
