The nymph, Erigone, is mentioned by Statius and Virgil, and figures prominently in the sixth book of Ovid's Metamorphoses. She is, in legend, the source of the constellation Virgo. Ex: Oettingen-Wallerstein collection.

Engraving after Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre (1713-89), French painter who replaced Boucher as painter to the king and also enjoyed the patronage of the king's mistress Madame de Pompadour. Crayon-manner print after a study by Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre (1713-89), French painter who replaced Boucher as painter to the king and also enjoyed the patronage of the king's mistress Madame de Pompadour. While Pierre's drawing no longer survives, it is believed to have been a study for the head of Venus in his painting 'The Judgement of Paris', painted for Frederick the Great (c.1759) and now in the Royal Palace, Potsdam.
