Rare etching with small margins, ceramic design?, 190 x 290mm. 7½ x 11½". Margins a little trimmed. Two creases to lower left corner.
Two groups of figures in fashionable contemporary costume arranged around gaming tables, playing draughts and backgammon; the composition features a view of landscaped grounds, the whole almost completely framed by ornate scrollwork and foliage. From a book of designs or ornament prints; numbered '3' upper right. By Johann Esaias Nilson (1721 - 1788), ornamental designer and printmaker, called 'the German Watteau'.

Half-length portrait of Catherine II (1729-1796), in profile, set in a roundel in an architectural capriccio, with the Three Graces paying tribute. Catherine II ruled Russia between 1762 and 1796, the longest rule by a female monarch in Russia's history.

Elizaveta Petrovna (1709-62), Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death. She led Russia into the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48) and the Seven Years' War (1756-63), and spent vast amounts of money on archectural projects in and around St Petersburg. Part of a series of portraits of European monarchs by Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-88), 'the German Watteau'. Nilson was part of a family of artists and established himself as the leading Augsburg artist of his day, whose influence extended across publishing, art academies, a role as court painter, and the decorative arts (especially ceramics).
