A half portrait of Cardinal Antonio Barberini (1608-1671) in an oval garland of oak leaves atop a plinth decorated with a coat of arms. He wears typical clerical dress with skull cap and the isignia of the Order of the Saint-Eprit. Antonio was an influential figure of the House of Barberini, which helped shape the politics, religion art and music of 17th century Italy. His uncle was appointed Pope Urban VIII in 1623 and elevated Antonio and his brothers to Cardinal. PW 10.

Charles V (1643-90), Duke of Lorraine but not allowed to rule, as Lorraine was under French occupation during his lifetime. He entered Habsburg service, becoming one of their most successful generals, defeating the Turks at the Siege of Vienna, 1683. He died suddenly in 1690. According to Voltaire, Louis XIV paid tribute to him with the words "I have lost the greatest, wisest and most generous of my enemies". The portrait was engraved by Robert Nanteuil, the most celebrated of French 17th century portrait engravers, published in his 'Portraits de Nanteuil Tome I'. R.D. 63

Possibly derived from Robert Nanteuil's portrait of Colbert 'from the life' of 1670. Originally issued in Perrault's 'Les Hommes illustres', a series of biographies written by Perrault with portraits engraved by Edelinck, Jacques Lubin, Louis Simonneau and Van Schuppen. Jean Loret (c.1600-65), French poet who published a weekly journal of Parisian gossip society, written as letters in verse to Marie d'Orléans Longueville, published as a collction in 'La Muse historique'. The first volume is believed to contain the earliest written reference to the tales of Mother Goose. Such was Loret's fame that this portrait was engraved by Robert Nanteuil, the most celebrated of French 17th century portrait engravers, and published among portraits of the people he wrote about, in 'Portraits de Nanteuil Tome I'.
