Two hunters, one in the centre in profile and saddled, with a groom leaning against him. A fox hunt is in progress in the background. After David Morier (1702 - 1770). Brought to England from his native Switzerland in 1743 by the Duke of Cumberland who appointed him 'Limner' in 1751 with a salary of £100. After the Duke's death in 1765, royal patronage declined and he died in poverty. A plate re-issued by Sayer, numbered '249' lower left.

Half-length portrait of Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), in an oval. Looking towards the viewer, wearing his armour with a sash diagonally from the left shoulder. Prince William Augustus was the third son of King George II. He was known as 'butcher Cumberland' for his harsh suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion in 1746.

Two dapple grey horses, bridled and blinkered, with a Dalmatian to the left. After David Morier (1702 - 1770). Brought to England from his native Switzerland in 1743 by the Duke of Cumberland who appointed him 'Limner' in 1751 with a salary of £100. Stipple bust portrait after Morier, in armour and sash, trimmed to image and pasted into engraved oval frame, surmounted by decorative urns; 'W.D. of Cumberland' inscribed in ink mss to scroll cartouche below. Watermarked laid paper; plate 195 x 155mm, 7¾ x 6". Good; full margins.
Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721 - 1765), was the third son of George II and a life-long soldier. The Duke was described by Horace Walpole as 'proud and unforgiving, fond of war for its own sake'. His victory at Culloden in 1746 ended the Jacobite threat, but his severe treatment of the rebels earned him the nickname 'Butcher Cumberland'. The portrait after David Morier (1705? - 1770).
