Brian Boru leading the Irish Guards from Buckingham Palace on a very wet day. The Regiment of the Irish Guards was formed in April, 1900 by order of H.R.H. Queen Victoria to commemorate the bravery of the Irish troops in the Boer War in 1899 and 1900. They played a major part in both World Wars, winning a total of six Victoria Crosses. The Regimental Mascot is an Irish Wolfhound who is usually looked after by a Drummer, and leads the Regiment on all parades. The first Regimental Pet was Brian Boru. He was presented by Mrs Gerard after she won the "Irish Guards Presentation Hound Competition" at Crystal Palace in 1902.
