Etching, platemark 175 x 130mm (7 x 5"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet at corners, on verso of which 'C. Maratti fc 1660' in old hand.
The newly-born Christ adored by the Virgin and angels. Original etching by Carlo Maratta or Maratti (1625 - 1713), Italian painter, active mostly in Rome, known principally for his classicizing paintings executed in a Late Baroque Classical manner. The leading Roman painter of his day, Maratti was the last exponent of the great classical tradition of Roman painting that had originated with Raphael (1483-1520) and was continued into the seventeenth century by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) and Maratti's teacher Andrea Sacchi. This is one of Maratti's few original prints (he usually worked with professional engravers to make prints from his paintings).
