Clara Novello (1818-1908), singer and daughter of the music publisher Vincent Novello. Born at 240 Oxford Street, London, Novello made her public debut at the Theatre Royal, Windsor in 1832 after studying in Paris. Following her marriage to Count Giovanni Baptista Gigliucci in 1843 Novello put her career on hold to raise a family and assist her husband in the fight for Italian independence. However, when Count Gigliucci lost his property in the 1848 uprisings, Novello returned to the stage, performing both in the UK and on the continent. Novello retired, while still popular, in 1860, to live with Count Gigliucci in Rome and Fermo.
