Anstey was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, where he distinguished himself for his Latin verses. He became a fellow of his college in 1745 but the degree of M.A. was withheld from him, owing to the offence caused by a speech he made, begining, 'Doctors without doctrine, artless Masters of Arts, and Bachelors more worthy of the rod than the laurel'. In 1805, he made No. 4 Royal Crescent, Bath his permanent home, (albeit the plaque recording this is actually displayed outside No. 5) where in 1766 he penned his famous rhymed letters, 'The New Bath Guide or Memoirs of the Blunderhead Family'. The work had immediate success, and was enthusiastically praised for its original kind of humour by Walpole and Gray. Anstey was buried at St. Swithin's Church in Bath but has a white marble memorial tablet in Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.

[Sir Walter Scott Bart.]
Sir T Lawrence P R A. J H Robinson.
[n.d. 1830.]
Line Engraving. 536 x 432mm. Unfinished proof, rich contrast in impression.
Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (14 August 1771-21 September 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Great Britain, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and (to a lesser extent) his poetry are still read, but he is far less popular nowadays than he was at the height of his fame. Nevertheless many of his works remain classics of English literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley and The Heart of Midlothian.
