A view of a Sequoiadendron giganteum (also known as the giant sequoia, giant redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood, or Wellingtonia), the world's largest tree, shown with figures to show scale. Published in van Houtte's 'Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe', after the tree had been introduced to Europe by William Lobb for James Veitch's Nursery. The first European reference to the tree was in 1833, but the first scientific naming of the species was by John Lindley in December 1853, as recorded here. However the name 'Wellingtonia' had already been used, but the name was not corrected until 1939.
