E Kirkall Sculp. Engraving, sheet 150 x 80mm (6 x 3"). Trimmed. A poet trying to work in the most unfavourable of circumstances. The theme of the tormented poet was a common one in early eighteenth century art, with Hogarth's 'The Distressed Poet' (1737) the best-known example. Engraving by Elisha Kirkall (1681/2-1742), prolific and versatile engraver, and possibly published as an illustration to Dryden, Pope or another of the poets he illustrated.
