Edward Jones (1752 - 1824), known as Bardd y Brenin, or the King's Bard, was a musician and Welsh writer. He taught music to many persons of rank and was appointed bard to the Prince of Wales, an honorary office, in 1783. In 1784 he published ‘Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards, preserved by Tradition and Authentic Manuscripts from very remote Antiquity, with a Collection of the Pennillion and Englynion, Epigrammatic Stanzas or native Pastoral Sonnets of Wales, a History of the Bards from the Earliest Period, and an Account of their Music, Poetry, and Musical Instruments,’ London, folio, in 2 parts; republished with additions in 1794. This companion volume was issued in 1802. These works, largely based on the author's original researches among unpublished Welsh manuscripts, rescued and preserved some of the oldest Welsh airs extant. In many ways Jones can be said to have invented Wales as the 'land of song', while defining its people as 'aboriginal Britons' and as the oldest musical nation in Europe. A scarce Rowlandson image.

[Bristol during the Reform Act Riots of 1831]
[Bristol during the Reform Act Riots of 1831] View of the New Prison & Two Toll Houses, on Fire. As it Appeared, Oct. 30th 1831
J. Jones sc. Pub.d by A. Giudice [c.1832]
Etching and aquatint, sheet 95 x 120mm (3¾ x 4¾"). Very rare.
One of several prints made in the wake of the 1831 Bristol Riots. These were amongst the several manifestations of civil unrest which took place after the House of Lords rejected the second Reform Bill. The Reform Bill aimed to improve 'rotten boroughs' standards and to give Britain's fast growing industrial towns greater representation in the House of Commons. The riots continued for three days during which the palace of Robert Gray the Bishop of Bristol, the Mansion House, and private homes and property were looted and destroyed, along with the demolition of much of the gaol and toll houses. Work on the Clifton Suspension Bridge was halted and Isambard Kingdom Brunel was sworn in as a special constable.

The alderman stands at centre, wearing the cuckold's horns, feeding Kean's love letters to his wife (standing to the left) into a cooking pot as the devil stokes the fire with bellows. These letters were read out in court: one, addressed to 'Little Breeches' (as is one of the letters in the pot), continued 'My darling love/Little impudent bitch, Come immediately & apologise for your impudence yesterday'. Kean lost and was forced to pay £800 to Cox, although the public disapproval that forced him to leave the country cost him far more.

Sir Philip Burne-Jones Bart. Heliog. Dujardin.
Copyright 1900, by Mendoza, Ltd.
Photogravure. 305 x 250mm (12 x 9¾"). Foxing, mostly marginal.
(Joseph) Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936), writer and poet. Born in Bombay, he was educated in England but returned to India and worked for the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore. His many publications include Plain Tales from the Hills, 1887, The Jungle Book, 1894, and Kim, 1901. He is unequalled as an observer of the Raj and as a commentator on the duties and obligations of empire. Later in life he settled in Sussex, from which he drew the inspiration for Puck of Pook's Hill, 1906, and Rewards and Fairies, 1910, as well as some of his finest late stories. Long out of favour because of the imperial themes in his work, he is now recognized as one of the major talents of his time. After the 1899 oil painting by Sir Philip Burne-Jones, 2nd Bt (1861-1926) in the National Portrait Gallery.

Etching and engraving. 202 x 290mm (8 x 11½). Trimmed and laid on album page.
Satire on Lord Bute's alleged promotion of Scots, in ten compartments each with two lines of verse (presumably reduced versions of ten larger prints, not all of which are in the British Museum collection). 'The Whipping Post': a Scotsman in a kilt flogs the naked figure of Britannia with a thistle, a sleeping lion rests at the foot of the whipping post beside Britannia's shield, Pitt begs on his knee for mercy and a chained mastiff barks furiously. 'The Scrubbing Post': Bute and two other Scots scratch themselves, one rubbing against a rough post topped by the head of a term. 'The Penny Post': a postman delivers a letter to a wealthy Scot while a chimney boy walks by. "The General Post": a Scottish general, preceded by a bagpiper, rides in front of a troop of infantry. 'The Highest Post': Bute expels Pitt from the Treasury and a number of Scots herd through the doors; a ghost (perhaps the old king, George II) appears on the left. 'The Triple Post': Britannia hangs Lord Bute at Tyburn (the triple tree) where a goose (probably the Duke of Bedford) and a fox (Henry Fox) are already hanging; a clergyman (possibly intended for Charles Churchill) stands beneath the gallows; on the left, Princess Augusta weeps while in the crowd behind her a man releases three pigeons into the air; on the right are two sheriffs on horseback, a woman ballad-seller with a 'Last Dying Speech' and an elegant couple. 'The Jumping Post': Scotsmen leap over posts labelled, 'Post Of[fice]', 'Custom Ho[use]", "Excise Of[fice]", and "Admiralty Of[fice]" towards the open window of the Treasury where a sentry sleeps on the ground in front of his box. 'The Starting Post': a horse race led by Bute who is cheered on by Princess Augusta. 'The Sign Post': an inn sign, lettered 'The Salutation', shows Bute and Princess Augusta kissing (see BM Satires 3953). 'The Directing Post': two Scotsmen hike along the 'Road to preferment' towards London which can be seen in the distance.
From the Oettingen-Wallerstein Collection. BM Satires: 3944.

A series of apocalyptic images; Britannia stands on the right holding her spear next to a cornucopia filled with exotic fruit;in the centre a grey bearded man consults a man with a Van Dycke who is seated at a table with a map of europe, they both wear military uniforms, a list comes out from behind his chair 'Turkey, Italy, Paris, FRance, Italy.' Left of them the Pope holds a scroll 'Concordat', while a monarch points to it, a man at a table scribes. In the background left a battle featuring elephants takes place, below a naval battle, right another battle. Right of that a man addresses a crowd. A scrollon the ground titled Reform. Published alongside the astrological periodical 'The Prophetic Messenge'r, also known as 'Raphael's Almanac', between 1827 and 1861. The purpose of the pen name Raphael was to call upon the archangel Raphael, who is commonly associated with Mercury, the gods' messenger. Several British astrologers employed it during the first part of the 1800s, and their combined use helped astrology come back into vogue.
