Joshua Marsden Late a Missionary in Nova Scotia &c

Joshua Marsden (1777-1837), Methodist minister and author. In 1796 Marsden enlisted in the navy, and his experiences of witnessing 'profanity in all its diabolical characters' seem to prepared him for the effect which Methodist services had upon him. He first preached on the Bolton circuit, and offered to become a missionary in Nova Scotia, Canada, when new recruits were sought in British North America. In 1808 he took up an appointment in Bermuda, an inhospitable colony which had imprisoned its first British missionary. Marsden was more successful, and when he left Bermuda in 1812 there were 136 members of the Methodist society on the island. The War of 1812 prevented Marsden from returning to Britain so he preached in the US for two years, sailing to Britain in 1814 and continuing his work there.
