Edward Hildebrandt (1818-1869) went on a world tour in the 1860s with stops that included the United States. A folio of his works from his round-the-world voyage were published as chromolithographs in 1864 in Berlin under the title 'Reise um die Erde' (Journey around the Earth). His original watercolours were exhibited in London in 1866 and Crystal Palace in 1868, just a year before his death in Berlin.
