The Unfortunate Death of Major Andre [with 'The Manner in which the American Colonies Declared themselves Independant of the King of England, throughout the different Provinces, on July 4 1776]
Hamilton delin Goldar sculp
[both from Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England, 1783]
Two engravings, both approx 180 x 125mm (7 x 5"). Both trimmed to image, losing text and border, and glued to backing sheets. With text for the Death of Major Andre glued to sheet separately.
Two scenes of American interest, from Edward Barnard's history of England (1783). The first shows Americans celebrating the Declaration of Independence in 1776 (one person waves a flag while another holds a sign reading 'America Independant 1776') while the second shows the hanging of John André at Tappan, New York on 2 October 1780. André, an army officer and spy, was aide-de-camp of Henry Clinton, commander-in-chief of British forces in America from 1778. In this capacity André handled the correspondence between Clinton and various American spies, and also negotiated with General Benedict Arnold, who was planning to surrender to the British the fort at West Point, New York. André was on his way to a personal interview with Arnold when, disguised as a civilian, he was seized by American militiamen. He was brought before a military board convened by George Washington, found to have acted in the character of a spy, and sentenced to hanging. André's actions were commemorated by a monument erected in Westminster Abbey in London, where his remains were transferred in 1821.

The Right Honourable Charles James Fox.
The Right Honourable Charles James Fox.
Gavinus Hamilton pinxt. Joseph Strutt, sculpt.
London, Publish'd 1, July, 1794, by John Jeffryes, Ludgate Hill.
Rare stipple. 352 x 251mm.
Charles James Fox (1749-1806), styled The Honourable from 1762, as a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years. Fox was the first foreign secretary of the United Kingdom and vocal supporter of American independence. Also known for his rivalry with William Pitt the Younger and a staunch opponent of George III he was reckless in politics as at the gaming tables. Fox held office briefly as a Tory under Lord North then led the opposition. Fox strongly criticised Lord North and the conduct of the American war, viewing the cause of the American patriots as a struggle for liberty against oppressive external power. He supported the revolutionaries of the United States, often dressing in the colours of George Washington's army. He championed America’s cause, denouncing taxation of Americans without their consent. Reform was a passion but as a supporter of the revolutionary cause in France, his credibility was diminished from 1792 by the excesses of the French revolutionaries.

Gavinus Hamilton pinxit 1766 Dominicus Cunego sculp.t Romae
E Tabula in Oedibus Nobilis Viri Ducis de Rochefoucault
Fine engraving. platemark 465 x 275mm (18¼ x 10¾"), with very large margins.
Fine engraving after a painting by Gavin Hamilton (1723-98), Scottish painter, archaeologist and dealer. While Hamilton's only identifiable pupil was David Allan, his encouragement assisted and influenced artists in Rome, where he worked, for over thirty years. He was instrumental, for instance, in persuading the sculptor Antonio Canova to abandon Rococo for a more restrained Neo-classical style. As the inscription states, this painting was then in the collection of the duke of Rochefoucault, French writer and explorer.
